SUP Yoga Accessories [What do I need to wear, get started] 1

SUP yoga accessories to consider:

  • Anchor
  • Quick-dry workout clothing
  • Belt PFD
  • Safety whistle
  • Board leash
  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle
  • Shoulder strap carrier
  • Electric paddle board pump

1. The Paddle Board and Paddle

A paddle board and paddle are really all you need to practice SUP yoga. If you are still looking at paddle boards for yoga I suggest an inflatable board. You don’t need a paddle board that was made specifically for yoga but they do have advantages.

2. SUP Yoga Clothing

What to wear for sup yoga:

  • swimwear
  • rash guard
  • quick-dry yoga clothing
  • sunglasses with retainers
  • sunscreen
  • hat
  • water sandals or flip flops for transport over pebbles, hot asphalt

You can wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing but stretchy water-resistant workout clothing is recommended. Yoga clothing or swimwear is fine.

Just keep in mind you could get wet. It’s better to avoid wearing cotton.

There are plenty of yoga leggings and tops that are made from quick-dry material.

Water sandals or flip flops are good for carrying your board over pebbles, hot asphalt, etc.

Sandals with straps are easy to store on your boards bungee system before your workout. You will want to practice SUP yoga barefoot.

3. SUP Anchor

A paddle board anchor will keep you from drifting and is the most popular accessory for sup yoga. Even on calm waters the wind, current and tide will move your board around. You can drop anchor and focus your mind on your yoga practice.

SUP Anchor Weight

A good anchor weight for a paddle board can range from 3-10lbs. The lighter anchors have limited use. I have found it’s best to go on the heavy side with 8-10lbs being the perfect anchor weight.

Attach your anchor rope to the tail d-ring on your board. You can play around with the rope length and get your board to stay where you want.

I prefer a grappling anchor for my paddle board. The claws seem to hold well in different water bottoms.

4. Inflatable Belt Pack PFD

A personal flotation device is a good idea and may be required by the Coast Guard depending on where you live.

Coast Guard regulations require that you have a PFD on your board. You don’t have to actually wear it. But really, what good will it do laying on your board?

An inflatable belt PFD is extremely low profile and the best choice for SUP yoga. They will only inflate if you pull a cord.

The Onyx M Series Belt Packs are among the best.

5. SUP Shoulder Carry Strap

All paddle boards have carry handles. But some paddlers really like a shoulder strap to carry their board to and from the water. This accessory has become so popular many paddle board brands are including them with their boards.

Some paddle boards have d-rings on the side that are perfect for clipping to shoulder slings.

If your board does not have the necessary d-rings you can buy shoulder sling with two board straps that go around your board. This seems like a bit of a hassle to me, but if you don’t have the right d-ring on the side of your board this is your only option.

6. Portable Electric SUP Air Pump

Using an electric air pump allows you to get your workout on the water, not in the parking lot with a manual pump.

If you have an inflatable paddle board you may want a portable electric air pump that works off a vehicle outlet.

An electric air pump sound like a great idea but to be honest I find these portable air pumps to be fickle. Cheap electric units seem to burn out with a lot of use.

But many paddlers swear an electric pump is the only way to go.

I have always preferred a manual hand pump. It takes some work but that is okay with me.

If you decide to go with an electric pump make sure it has the right adapter for your particular board air valve.
